In 1980 Thomas Merton Books was begun, at the request of the Abbey of Gethsemani, as an adjunct to the Bardstown Art Gallery. The gallery, open since 1971, is conveniently located for anyone visiting the monastery. The books and gallery are housed in a 1930's Arts & Crafts bungalow at 214 West Stephen Foster Ave.

After 20 years we are pleased to be offering the most extensive selection of books by and about Merton in the country. Please, do also take a look at our expanding miscellaneous section which includes books by other authors writing on spirituality, contemplation, mysticism, etc.

Gallery Hours are By Chance or By Appointment.
We live in the building, and we are usually here
Mon from 8:30 am-noon;
Tues-Sat from 8:30am-5:00 pm
We sometimes step out for lunch.

It is a good idea to call ahead to make certain we are here or to arrange a visit during our "off hours". Business necessitates our being absent at times, but we really do want to accommodate your needs and are willing rearrange our schedule for you when we can.
